In-Station Residence Program
Current and prospective members are encouraged to live at Station 39 (Bowie/Belair). Live-in members must be "regular members" of the BVFD, in good standing, and be able to be available for responding to emergency calls. Our modest living accommodations are provided RENT FREE in exchange for staffing fire and EMS apparatus for emergency services. This arrangement is ideal for students attending any of the local educational institutions (University of Maryland, University of Maryland University College, Bowie State University, Prince George’s Community College, and others). This arrangement is ideal for students who are pursuing college degrees in fire protection and engineering, nursing, medicine, public administration, criminal justice, or any academic discipline.
Our station has private bunks and self-study areas that provide an environment conducive for learning. Members who are enrolled at local universities and enrolled in specific fire and EMS related classes find the self-study areas a significant benefit. We are centrally located in the heart of the Washington D.C-Baltimore, MD metropolitan area. Our stations have easy access to the major highways and interstates in the area including Route 50 (John Hanson Highway), I-495, I-295, I-97 and Route 3/301 (Crain Highway). We are 20 minutes from downtown Washington DC and Annapolis MD, and 35 minutes from downtown Baltimore.
For more information about becoming a live-in at Station 39, please contact Vice President 839 Lavonia Byrd.
