The Bowie Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad welcome people interested in becoming volunteer members. Members can train to become fire fighters, emergency medical technicians, or both. Regular members must be eighteen years old or older. Junior members must be sixteen years old with parental permission to join. Members need to be dedicated and willing to help each other in emergency situations. The Department is also always in search of Auxiliary Members that can help with administrative duties.

There are several classes of member laid out in the Constitution and By-Laws:

  • Regular: A Regular member shall be at least 18 years old, and of good moral character. A Regular member may not participate in Emergency Operations as defined by Prince George’s County Law.
  • Regular – Emergency Response: A Regular Emergency Response member shall be any Regular member who participates in Emergency Operations within Prince George’s County as a Riding member. Regular Emergency Response members must have met all qualifications and certifications required by County Law and must maintain all annual training requirements, re-certifications and continuing education required by Law.
    • Any Regular Emergency Response member who does not maintain the annual required training and re-certifications will automatically be moved from the classification of Regular Emergency Response member to the classification of Regular member. This move will only be authorized and made by the Fire Chief and or President. It is the members’ responsibility to maintain the required annual training and certifications and advise the Department when they expire.
  • Life: A Life member shall have served at least 15 years as an active member of the Department. A year of active service is defined as a year in which a member has met the requirements for one year's credit under the Prince George's County LOSAP program.
  • Junior: A Junior member shall be between the ages of 16 and 18 years old and otherwise meet the requirements of a Regular member.
  • Honorary: The Executive Board may grant Honorary membership to non-members of the Department. Career members who are not regular members shall automatically become Honorary members during their assignment to the Department.
  • Inactive Regular: Applies only to Regular members and may be granted by the Executive Board.
  • Auxiliary: An Auxiliary member shall be at least 16 years of age, of good moral character, and actively utilize his/her skills for the good and support of the Department.
